Summary/Abstract: Hemiola is a contrasting rhythmic figure, achieved either by syncopation or by grouping ternary values into binaries for short moments, especially in cadences. Depending on the tempo, hemiola can have the effect of rhythmic dynamization or, on the contrary, of rarefaction. The association of a trochaic formula with an iambic one often creates the hemiolic effect. Hemiola is a rhythmic device in which musical accents are displaced from the usual metric, generating a sensation of fluctuation and temporary instability. It usually creates a sensation of delay or anticipation of the rhythm. The paper investigates – chronologically (in two distinct sections) – the way in which this particularly expressive musical figure is used in the history of music.
