Summary/Abstract: The novel The Casual Vacancy, published in 2012, is the first novel by writer J. K. Rowling intended for adults, in which she addresses a series of themes such as death, addictions, loneliness, politics, dysfunctional families, corruption. The novel, whose action is set in a small town in England, brings to the fore characters who make up a diverse world, dominated by a multitude of problems, who try to survive and find their own way. The sudden death of a local councilor in Pagford leads to numerous conflicts, betrayals, revealing the hidden lives of the characters. The writer builds a truthful world through memorable characters who belong to various social classes, and who compose masks to be accepted by society, most often in a game of manipulation and lies. The current issues, the strong writing, the well-constructed characters, the irony make this novel an authentic read meant to hold up a mirror to the reader and to today's world dominated by hypocrisy and lack of meaning.
