Summary/Abstract: In a society, which endures galloping changes, today more than ever, sociology and related branches of this science, need to “unfreeze” the concept of ethnic identity, in order to understand the different social realities, which they face. So, ethnic identity is the socially constructed identity, by different social groups, in relation to other groups of the same community. For this reason, the use of this concept can be quite fluid and flexible and can be adapted according to the climate of the community of which it is a part. Ethnic identity, therefore, is that representation, which is built on differences and distinctive features, in order to distinguish itself, being the result of intense contact with others. The work emphasizes the ethnic group, as a social category, which leads to the formation of ethnic identity and ethnic identification, through the processes of internalization. It represents a theoretical analysis of this construct, which includes different approaches, through the prism of social reality, with a focus on the ethnic identity of minority groups, in a society that tends towards multiculturalism.
