Summary/Abstract: While creating the documentary film Tales from the Cell, as a director, I faced numerous ethical and aesthetic dilemmas. Our film tells the story of the relationship between imprisoned fathers and their children through a unique, creative process based on writing tales and turning them into short fiction films. Throughout this process, we had to define how to select and portray the participants, the film’s specific cinematic language, its dramaturgy, and the representation of the director’s role, taking various moral and creative aspects into account. The making of the film provided many lessons, which I aim to summarize in this article.
