Summary/Abstract: "The general objective of this study is to illustrate the relationship between sign, symbol, and signal in botany. We aim to examine how the relationship between sign, signal, and symbol has been perceived over time. Language is regarded as a system of verbal signs, which differs from other systems of non-linguistic signs, such as traffic signs, maritime signals, or the symbolic languages used in mathematics, chemistry, physics and botany. These are later, conventional creations that can be modified. The working method consisted in describing the main theories that have contributed, over time, to the definition of the linguistic sign, as these have taken shape starting with Aristotle. The first conclusion that emerges is that language is an open semiotic system that offers numerous relational possibilities. The linguistic sign is at once a sign, a symbol, and a signal."
