Summary/Abstract: The two title words "humanity" and "utopia" might give the impression that our considerations are about a juxtaposition of two concepts, namely "humanity" and "utopia"—or even about the confrontation of humane sentiment and ideologically fixed thinking. However, the difficulties one encounters when considering the specifically modern problem of utopia in relation to the idea of humanity become immediately apparent if one remembers that the concept of humanitas was once identified with an ethically understood philanthropy. If we ask why the barbarian is contrasted with homo humanus, the uneducated with the educated, and in doing so allow the question of the legitimacy of such oppositions to arise, we encounter a time-honored convention that one can choose to accept or not.
