Summary/Abstract: The Republic of Turkey aspires to be a leader among Muslim countries and one of the key actors on the global political stage. The subject of the author’s research was the process of transformation, modernisation and development of the Turkish arms industry during the presidency of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, with particular emphasis on technological and strategic conditions, Turkey’s position in the international arena, and the intensification of the state’s aspirations to become a global power. The aim of the research is to analyse the directions and dynamics of modernisation programmes, and the conditions for the development of the Turkish arms industry during the presidency of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as well as the impact on military independence and self-sufficiency. The article responds to the hypothesis that the development of the arms industry contributes to strengthening Turkey's role in the region and internationally. When analysing the causes and decisions that have had a decisive impact on the development of the arms sector, the author applied the theory of classical and neoclassical realism, which combines the influence of external and internal factors on policy-making and emphasises the role of maximising state power in order to control other actors on the global stage. The article presents a broad spectrum of development directions in Turkey’s domestic defence sector, ranging from the latest weapons technologies and defence systems to projects related to the weapons of the future. It illustrates the geopolitical doctrine of Mavi Vatan (“Blue Homeland”), under which Turkey is modernising its naval fleet. The author discusses the most important Turkish defence companies and their latest innovations. The article also presents examples of military cooperation with other countries and export successes, which have in turn strengthened Turkey’s economic and military power, making it a significant player in the global defence industry.
