Summary/Abstract: Under the active Hungarian public finance model in place since 2010, labour market regulation has come under strong state influence and control. The main results are that 1 million more people are in work, the employment rate has risen from 52% to close to 80%, while the unemployment rate did not rise above 4% during the crisis years 2020-2024. The Hungarian government is providing targeted labor market support and has introduced new rules to strengthen the labor market from 2025. The measures are designed to reduce emigration to the West and to help families and society thrive. Following a sketchy outline of this Hungarian package, the paper examines how Slovakia, a neighboring country with a similar level of development, has put in place concrete measures to protect its labor market. The study describes in detail the main elements of the Slovak labor market regulation and then draws conclusions on the differences in regulatory methodology between the two countries.
