Summary/Abstract: A widely-discussed issue related to Roma education and the low degree of school activity of Roma children is presented in this article. Most of the researches carried out and statistical data obtained on this problem have indicated a high degree of illiteracy of Roma people of various age groups. An especially alarming fact is that Roma children in obligatory school age do not enroll in education institutions and have no motivation to participate in school activities. The article explores certain preconditions for the situation of educational exclusion of Roma children. The analysis is focused on different ethnocultural characteristics of the Roma community in Bulgaria. The article aims to reveal the pattern of „Roma schools“ created in the years of socialism and which have stimulated ethnic divisions in education. The evolution of Roma schools is outlined, as well as the complex of what is often referred to in public discourse as a „specific Roma culture“. Special attention is focused on some case studies revealing essential aspects of the educational profile of the Roma. One of the basic issues of the article is that the degree of Roma interest in education depends on the economic and cultural conditions of society; it is a result of the environment and of the meager interest of the family. Moreover, the low educational level of the Roma is not only a problem for the school itself, but likewise a global social and management problem; it is connected with the lack of adequate perspectives and conditions for this ethnic community.
