Summary/Abstract: The article provides a theoretical and empirical picture of the social and physical borders and the parallel existence of the various multicultural groups in Bulgaria and draws particular attention to the Roma. It analyses the deep crisis that the Roma community is facing; this ethnic group has become the most disadvantaged in Bulgaria during the period of transformation. This fact is analyzed by spacing and timing the various policies towards the Roma and in considering the fragile boundary between resources and activities, between social and economic integration and political participation. The author reveals the step-by-step process of distancing of the Roma and the onset of the use of their parallel existence as a political resource, which is strengthened by the isolation they face in the times of transition. The author also reveals the process of ethnic manipulation that leads to social marginalization and analyzes the problem of Roma s poverty. The Romas marginal economic position and social peripheral status places this group in the category of social outsider.
