Summary/Abstract: It can be concluded from my study of Ottoman tax registers that, on the eve of Bulgarian Liberation, the Gypsy population was approximately 4-5 percent of the population of the Bulgarian lands. At that time part of them was already integrated into either the Bulgarian or Turkish population in the country. However, the fate of the Gypsy population, in the past and nowadays, remains an important topic of research and needs to be studied further. The enclosed tables with statistical data derived from Ottoman tax registers reveal that part of the Gypsy population of the Danube Province (present-day North Bulgaria, the regions of Kyustendil, and Dobrudja) began integrating into either the Bulgarian community or the Turkish, started living among these communities and paying the same taxes as them. The data included in the tax registers are not homogeneous, and in many cases are not even representative. However, their systematization allows us to draw important conclusions about the social structure of the different ethnic groups living in the region, and of the Gypsy population in particular.
