Summary/Abstract: The article presents preliminary observations on the studied issues in Southwest Bulgaria. Seventeen images of the Slavic Enlighteners (icons and frescoes) created between 1862 and 1912 are included. Some of them are described based on data and photographs from the archive of As. Vasiliev, kept in the Central State Archive. Several images have already been in scientific circulation, and others, including several previously unpublished, are described on the basis of collected materials from field studies. The visual material allows us to conclude that in the western lands of Bulgaria, which remained under Ottoman rule after 1878, the ideas of the Renaissance remained unchanged until 1912. They were expressed through the illustration of historical events and personalities, aiming to unite the Bulgarian community around its core values. On the basis of stylistic analysis and similarities, five icons have been attributed to the little-studied work of the zographer Andon from Melnik.
