Summary/Abstract: In the history of Japan, the transition from the Heian period (794-1185) to the Kamakura period constitutes an important field of study with its deep-rooted social, economic and political effects. When we evaluate this process in terms of the use of power, the transition in question corresponds to an intricate stage in which, on the one hand, the system and understanding of the application of power in Japan changed radically, and on the other hand, there was continuity in terms of both application and understanding. In this study, the change and continuity in the use of power in the transition from the Heian period to the Kamakura period will be evaluated with the focus on the Minamoto and Fujiwara clans, two clans that can symbolize both aspects. This study also aims to evaluate the nature of power relations in a specific period of Japanese history and the continuity and rupture of power in a given period and geography.
