Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on the Czech animated film director Jiří Trnka’s (1912–1969) animated shorts made in 1945–46, exploring the notion that Trnka could be considered the “Walt Disney of the East.” The paper examines four of his underrated early works—Grandpa Planted a Beet (Zasadíl dědek řepu, 1945), The Animals and the Petrov Kids (Zvířátka a petrovští, 1946), The Springman and the SS (Pérák a SS, 1946), and The Gift (Dárek, 1946)—in relation to the aesthetics of American animation, specifically Disney, Warner Bros., and UPA. Its central argument is that Trnka deserves recognition on the global map of animation not only for his stop-motion puppet animations but also for his animated shorts, as the influence between American cartoons and Trnka’s work was reciprocal: while American cartoons influenced the Czech creator’s animated films, Czech animation also left its mark on American cartoons. The conclusion asserts that Central European animation should be reconsidered within the framework of international trends to secure its rightful place in global film history.
