Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār’s Approach to the Informative (Khabarī) Attributes of God

Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the approach of Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣaffār, one of the Hanafī-Māturīdite scholars of the Western Karakhanids period in the 5th/11th, and 6th/12th century, to the informative (khabarī) attributes of God, an issue characterized by disagreements in the history of kalām. This study aims to determine, evaluate, and systematically transfer the approach of al-Ṣaffār, who is an important representative of the Hanafī-Māturīdite tradition, to the issue of khabari attributes, along with the original examples he put forward, and his objections to his opponents in his own works. The identification, and evaluation of al-Ṣaffār’s approach to the subject of khabari attributes could contribute to a better understanding of the Hanafī-Māturīdite theology. Since this research focuses on a single scholarly figure, it used the method of “elaboration”. The results of the study were written in an objective, and descriptive way. A major finding of the study was that al-Ṣaffār opposes the understanding of khabar, which leads to the idea of simile, and reification. Although al-Ṣaffār does not find wrong the attitude of the scholars of al-salaf al-ṣāliḥ, who thought that these attributes should be considered in an arbitrary way without being interpreted, he advocates that these attributes should be interpreted by adhering to the integrity of the Qurʾān, and the linguistic rules to avoid mistakes about the attributes. He also thinks that the interpretations put forward should not be claimed as absolute truth. He justifies this thought with many revelation-based, and rational evidence, and examples based on semantic methods.
