The Use of EndNote in Social Science Research

Summary/Abstract: The essential element of scientific publications is to specify the source of the data used. In this way, readers, and other researchers can check the accuracy of the information provided. On the other hand, specifying the source of the data used is a requirement of academic ethics. Because not citing a source used is counted as plagiarism, and requires some judicial/administrative investigations. Various reference management software has been developed to prevent problems, and provide convenience to the authors. Among them, EndNote is one of the most used around the world. Using this software, articles, books, etc., imprint information of the publications benefited from can be saved, cited, pdf files of documents can be archived, and automatically added as citations or references to the text. The software in question includes more than 6000 citation styles, and allows new citation systems (such as ISNAD) developed over time. The most crucial benefit of this program is that it provides great convenience to the authors, and reduces the typos that can be made while creating citations, and bibliography to almost zero. Sometimes unintentionally not adding the sources used in the research process to the footnotes, and bibliography can lead to serious ethical problems. Considering that there has been expanding literature in the last 20 years in social sciences in general, and in theology research, it can be said that the number of publications that are/must be cohnsulted in scientific research is increasing day by day. Therefore, researchers must check which works they refer to during the study process or specify each of these works in the bibliography. At this point, EndNote software provides excellent convenience to the authors, saving the time spent on manual footnote, and bibliography writing, and allowing them to focus on the analysis of the text. In addition, it is possible to automatically save the citation information of the references to the EndNote library by searching the online bibliographic databases. There is also the option to import data files from EndNote online services, and database libraries. However, the most crucial opportunity EndNote provides keeping the library you created by synchronizing it on digital platforms. This study will emphasize the difficulty, and necessity of citation, and bibliography in academic writing, what EndNote software is, its functions,, and what kind of convenience it provides for researchers. Moreover, in an age where the trend of digitalization is increasing in almost all fields, considering the unique technical details of citation, and reference systems, it will be stated that the use of EndNote, and similar software will be inevitable soon.
