Using NVivo in Literature-Based Disciplines

Summary/Abstract: NVivo is a leading multifunctional software program for computer-assisted qualitative data analysis. However, this software is equally good for studies involving literature reviews in almost all fields of scholarly research. Documents, images, videos,, and datasets can be imported into NVivo, and analysed. It offers researchers who carry out most of their studies on literature elements different tools for analyzing, and making sense of the literature in an area. Some of these tools are coding, autocoding, note taking tools, linking tools, and queries. For example, if a researcher plans to do research in a new field that he has no knowledge of before, thanks to the theme-based auto-coding tool, he/she can automatically find the frequently used concepts in hundreds of pages of resources, and obtain preliminary information about the subject by reviewing the autocoding results. Thanks to automatic, and manual coding, text data can be organized effectively, and easily accessed at every stage of a research project. Similarly, framework matrices save time, and enable a deeper analysis in studies that evaluate information from different sources or compare research results. In short, advanced query options in text-oriented studies both save time, and ensure in-depth analysis, as it is the case many other tools in NVivo. This presentation focuses on these tools, involves the demonstration of some basic tools, and offers some practical hints.
