Summary/Abstract: The stylistic diversity of 20th-century music, that is, the coexistence of various forms of tonal and non-tonal concepts and compositional techniques, has led, either partially or entirely, to the irrelevance of applying a previously unified analytical approach to the harmonic language of composers—an approach that was applicable throughout the entire period of functional tonality from the 17th to the 19th century. This new stylistic order created the need for a new, adequate analytical approach—one sensitive enough in identifying new systems of relationships in 20th-century music to enable an understanding of the creative process. Yuri Kholopov’s new-tonality method (Ю́рий Холопов) involves a generalized methodological approach to the analytical and interpretative acquisition of pitch structures in 20th-century music, specifically within the context of solfège teaching. The method includes the classification of five modalities of pitch organization in 20th-century music, with a specific methodological and analytical approach proposed for each. Highly valuable, this method can also be applied in other areas of pedagogical practice—such as in harmony classes, as well as in other subjects focused on understanding 20th-century music.
