Summary/Abstract: In biblical Hebrew, the terms for children have a strong lexical representa on: each of thelexemes used reveals a diff erent aspect of childhood, relevant to a nomadic community whoselanguage was shaped by the harsh condi ons of wandering through the desert. Perhaps this iswhy this collec on contains so many lexemes (nouns or par cipia) that precisely indicate the ageand the degree of independence of a child. The author analyses selected Hebrew lexemes fromthe seman c fi eld CHILD star ng from the names of the youngest children up to older and moreindependent ones in order to confront the results of the research with the depic ons of childrenin selected Polish transla ons of the Bible. The analysis of vocabulary used to characterisechildren leads to the conclusion that although almost all the names originate from lexical rootscontaining the seman c component of care, a en on, generosity, sacrifi ce on the part of parentsand the community, the biblical texts foreground the great value of children as a founda on fora secure future of the whole society.
