Summary/Abstract: In my study, I examine the early years of Hungarian Television’s golden age, specifically the circumstances surrounding the production of its first original fictional films. I explore the technical and production history that set the stage for the creation of Tanya viharban (Storm Over the Farm) in 1958, marking the beginning of TV films and plays in Hungary. I also address the challenges faced by creators during the initial period when films were broadcast live. Through contemporary reviews and creators’ recollections, I provide a detailed analysis of Vacsora a Hotel Germániában (Dinner at Hotel Germania), filmed twice in 1958 and 1962, and Vitézek és hősök (Knights and Heroes) from 1959. The works of Imre Mihályfi and Éva Zsurzs serve as excellent illustrations of the formal, dramaturgical, and thematic characteristics of live television plays.
