Summary/Abstract: The paper suggests some ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course guidelines that can be used for training IT students in their freshman and second year of university studies, which is the time slot for most formal foreign language instruction in most undergraduate engineering programmes in Romanian universities. Taking into account present concerns for skill-based and attitude-shaping approaches in specialized language teaching, the reflex recourse to technology and the interest in keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in the field, also a commitment to permanently improve one’s teaching mechanisms creatively, all these seek to fit the learner’s needs and profiles. Based on the author’s 21-year teaching background in ESP, this discussion is meant to highlight some of the means that have proved to be the most effective along the way. Conversely, without the pretention of being exhaustive or of establishing hard and fast rules about what constitute the best practices in the area, one needs to keep an open mind about continuously calibrating methods by taking an honest look at the realities of academic experience.
