Social Criticism in Muhammad al-Muwaylihī’s Work ʿĪsā ıbn Hishām

Summary/Abstract: The work Hadīth ʿĪsā ibn Hishām written by Muhammad al-Muwaylihī is an attempt to approach the classical literary genre of maqāma. However it also carries traces of modern literary genres such as the novel and short story. The work critically examines the social changes that took place in Egyptian society over a period of approximately fifty years. It addresses various topics such as the characteristics of eastern and western civilizations, education, culture, law, and justice, from different perspectives. Initially the idea that all individuals forming Egyptian society are equal before justice is emphasized. Subsequently the work discusses the problems faced by a historical figure who having been wronged, embarks on a quest for justice to prove their innocence. The issues begin at the police station and extend to the appellate court. Through this the work aims to highlight the individual and institutional flaws within the judicial system that delay the delivery of justice. The main aim of the study is to provide a brief introduction to al-Muwaylihī and then analyze and examine the work Hadīth ʿĪsā ibn Hishām in terms of its subject, characters, time, place, and style. Examples of social change in Egyptian society addressed in the work are presented particularly within the context of law and justice. Additionally information obtained through document analysis as one of the research methods has been processed within the context of the relevant topics.
