Summary/Abstract: This genealogically-oriented essay considers two novels, Hordubal by Karel Čapek and The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, both of which are built on the plan of the classic intellectual English detective story. It seeks to demonstrate that in each, the fundamental noetic principle of the genre, which is the belief that the world can be known in its entirety, without complications, is eroded.
