Summary/Abstract: This paper argues for the historical and cultural significance of historical images of towns (16th-19th centuries) in present-day Romania, often overlooked in art historical scholarship. It explores their roles in disseminating information about European cultural heritage, considering various techniques and purposes of creation (paintings, engravings, prints). The study analyzes the evolution of urban representation from schematic depictions to realistic views, emphasizing the interplay between artistic styles, social contexts, and the perspectives of creators and viewers. It further examines the limitations of these images as historical sources, particularly concerning accuracy and biases introduced by the artists' backgrounds and lack of firsthand knowledge of the depicted locations. Examples from Sibiu are used to illustrate diverse representational styles.
