Summary/Abstract: A thorough study of the history of the Muṣḥaf must be grounded not only in transmitted reports but also in the practices of Qurʾānic manuscript writing. A thorough study of the history of the Muṣḥaf must be grounded not only in transmitted reports but also in the practices of Qurʾānic manuscript writing. This necessity underscores the importance of examining Qurʾānic manuscripts from different periods and regions in conjunction with theoretical knowledge. Especially when a Muṣḥaf is based on a particular tradition—such as qirāʾāt (variant readings), orthography, vocalization, waqf–ibtidāʾ (pausing and resuming), or verse numbering—research gains added value by revealing multiple dimensions of textual transmission. This article focuses on a manuscript dated 790 AH (1388 CE), attributed to Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Ḥalabī (d. 810/1407). While the main text follows the reading of Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ (d. 154/771), it includes all seven canonical readings. Although the manuscript was partially examined in Aḥmad Ḥātim alSāmarrāʾī’s doctoral dissertation Masāḥif al-Qirāʿāt: A Historical and Descriptive Study, the method of indicating variant readings has not yet been studied in depth. The present article analyzes this method systematically and offers biographical insights into al-Ḥalabī. It also investigates the reasons for selecting Abū ʿAmr’s reading as the base text, offering original contributions to the understanding of qirāʿāt transmission. Finally, the article that takes this assumption as its starting point explores additional features of the manuscript beyond the scope of qirāʿāt. The study concludes by addressing aspects of the manuscript that go beyond qirāʿāt differences. The study is based on a digital copy preserved at the Bavarian State Library, cataloged as al-Qurʾān–BSB–Cod.arab.1113, accesible at: https://www.digitale-sammlungen.de/en/view/bsb00137309. References follow the library’s page numbering. The manuscript is abbreviated as HM throughout the article.
