“Heroes” of the Transition – the image and influence of chalga performers and mutras in post- socialist Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: At the end of 1989, the transition from communism and totalitarianism to a market economy and democracy began in Bulgaria. During the first decade of it, the images of chalga performers and mutras came to the fore. The current study traces the emergence of the two types of figures and the interrelationship between them while also paying attention to the reasons and prerequisites for the mutras and chalga performers to become a phenomenon and to affect the development of Bulgaria in an economic and cultural aspect.
