Summary/Abstract: The topic of the life, lifestyle and history of the Gypsies, however laborious, due to the lack of authentic source material and the use of indirect ones, has aroused and continues to arouse research interest. The problems discussed in this study are insufficiently covered by the researchers of the Gypsy ethnicity both in Bulgaria and abroad, and, following the direction of the Historical Positivism, I believe that the study of the said ethnicity’s past should also include the origin of the name by which this ethnicity travels through time and space. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the origin, meaning, way of use and formation of the names “Kıptî” and “Chingene” by which the Gypsy ethnicity was named and registered in the Ottoman administration over the centuries, and to inquire for what reason the name Çingene / چینكانه / is preferred in modern Turkish while Kıptî / قبطی / - Gypsies was abandoned.
