Summary/Abstract: In Slovakia, the period of 2020-2023 was marked by unprecedented investigations of alleged corruption among high-ranked politicians and state officers of the former government. These events resulted in an intense controversy regarding the methods of law enforcement that culminated in the final months of the election campaign of 2023. The main protagonists, i.e., the representatives of the Smer political party and the leading officials of the police, put forward compelling but opposing accounts to make sense of the ongoing affairs. By drawing on the data of their press conferences and applying the sensemaking and ethnomethodological perspective, this study analyzes both the congruent and divergent features of their interpretative work. It is argued that the different institutional roles enabled or limited the main actors to employ certain argumentative devices and actions which might have affected the persuasiveness and mobilizing impact of their public explanations.
