Summary/Abstract: Cities and their views have been valuable visual materials for various artistic methods and forms of expression throughout different periods. In miniatures with traditional expression languages, structures, streets, and tree-lined areas often provide clues about the existence of a city, typically used to describe locations where significant events took place. When examining 16th-century Ottoman miniatures, it can be observed that some painters, particularly those who demonstrated stylistic differences, used visual data related to cities extensively, and even depicted city views exclusively. One of the most important of these painters is Matrakci Nasuh. He created miniatures documenting the places and features he encountered during royal campaigns. He compiled a travelogue from Istanbul to Baghdad, documenting many cities with their characteristic features. Particularly, the cities, terrains, and vegetation he encountered during his travels were presented with a unique perspective and depiction of their interconnections. This study will examine the fictional aspects of how Matrakci Nasuh created city topography and intercity connections in the manuscript book he produced during his campaign in Iraq. In this context, it will highlight how his approach serves as an important example in both a different creation process and the questioning of the perception of fiction and reality. Specifically, the study will explore how Matrakci Nasuh constructed city topography, defined intercity connections, and depicted vegetation that varied across different geographies through the examination of only some of the cities he addressed during his Baghdad campaign.
