Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the execution of commonly used bowing techniques, detaché and legato, in Kemane performance and their conversion into musical notation. A document analysis was conducted to identify the right-hand techniques used in Kemane’s performance in this descriptive qualitative research. First, the Kemane historical development was outlined, highlighting the transformation and evolution of its performance contexts from tradition to the present day. By examining available methods and academic publications on Kemane, kamancheh, and violin, the right-hand techniques used in bowed string instrument performance were analyzed in detail. Exercises for applying the detaché and legato bowing techniques in Kemane performance were proposed, along with demonstrations of their application in musical passages excerpted from Turkish folk songs. In this context, a personal interpretative approach to the performance style of the Kemane was adopted in the transcription of Kerimoğlu Zeybeği (Şu Muğla’nın Çamları), where the detaché and legato techniques were detailed using symbols and expressed in musical notation. Based on the findings of this study, a music notation system specific to the Kemane was developed, emphasizing the instrument’s performance style and bowing techniques. It is anticipated that the approaches suggested in this study can contribute to the development of bowing techniques in Kemane performance, their representation in musical notation, and their integration into pedagogy.
