SELF AND THE OBJECT WORLD IN ÖZDEMİR ASAF’S POEM TITLED “THE STORY OF THE CAT PLAYING WITH THE CANDLE FLAME”

Summary/Abstract: The act of discovering the self and identifying the other, which is an important stop in the individual's existence, takes on different appearances at various stages. This process, where psychologists mainly focus on childhood, images that exist impartially, freely and without rules in the irrational fictional universes of poets find a space for themselves through childhood dreams. The subject, who needs the presence of the other to discover himself, learns that every action has a response and that this response will be completed with a continuous transformation in the universe. Özdemir Asaf is one of the original writers of modern Turkish poetry. In his poems, he reflects the world and the inner world of the individual with his unique imagination. The verses woven of loneliness, love, disappointments and anxiety are like a mirror held to the inner world of a person. Özdemir Asaf expresses the self/subject with the image of a cat in his poem “The Story of the Cat Playing with the Candle Flame”. While doing this, it examines the relationship between the individual's self-world and the world of objects. He questions the issues of life-self and loneliness in his poetry, which is dominated by a closed narrative. In the poem, where images of candles and flames are intense, the narrator subject conveys his life adventure into verses in the light of various metaphors, saving the words from their everyday meanings and giving them an imaginative expression. In this study, Özdemir Asaf's poem titled “The Story of the Cat Playing with the Candle Flame” will be tried to be explained within the frame work of self and object theory.
