Summary/Abstract: It is evident that societies have historically derived benefits from music in terms of the protection and preservation of their cultural values. Turkish communities possess a cultural heritage replete with examples of music and musical instruments of great cultural significance. This cultural richness has given rise to a plethora of musical melodies and instruments, many of which have survived to the present day. As a consequence of the nomadic lifestyle of Turkish communities, examples of musical entertainment, celebration and mourning rituals are pervasive. Furthermore, in Central Asia, communities have preserved, maintained and transmitted their cultural values through the use of musical instruments such as the dombra, kopuz, dutar, saz, and others. In the steppes of Central Asia, the kam, shaman, bard, minstrel, akın, jırav, etc. have been the carriers, performers and transmitters of oral culture. In the Kazakh steppes, epics, legends, stories and poems were conveyed and preserved through the medium of akın and jırav. During the performance of these literary genres, the musical instruments most commonly employed by akın and jırav were the dombra and kopuz. The dombira has been a prominent feature of Kazakh cultural life for many years, and its increasing value and importance reflect this. In Kazakh culture, the dombira is regarded as a sacred musical instrument, and numerous legends have been created about its structure, parts and emergence. Additionally, the instrument has been the subject of extensive research by numerous scholars. This study examines the emergence process and history of the dombra, its structure, parts, types, dombra schools and masters, as well as its importance in terms of Kazakh culture.
