Summary/Abstract: Violence that results in the murder or attempted murder of women, or carries the risk thereof, is a social phenomenon that transcends national borders and constitutes a global issue. Its roots are closely tied to socially constructed roles deemed acceptable for women or men within a given society, commonly referred to as "gender." Femicide denotes the killing of women specifically because of their gender and can manifest in various forms, including intimate partner violence resulting in murder, torture and misogynistic killings, killings in the name of "honor," targeted killings in the context of armed conflict, dowry-related murders, killings due to sexual orientation and gender identity, murders of Indigenous and Aboriginal women and girls because of their gender, female infanticide and gender-based feticide, deaths associated with female genital mutilation, accusations of witchcraft, and other gender-based killings linked to organized crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and similar phenomena. The primary aim of this paper is to examine the manifestations of violence against women, with a particular focus on femicide, by analyzing available scholarly and professional literature, both domestic and international. Methodologically, the research adopts a descriptive-comparative approach, while the application of qualitative methods and case studies facilitates a comparative legal analysis of legislative frameworks in selected European Union member states. Through critical analysis, the paper seeks to assess the current situation and address the fundamental research question: Have significant advancements in addressing the societal problem of femicide been achieved, particularly through legislative reforms? Considering the research findings, which suggest that a considerable portion of gender-based violence can be prevented, the paper emphasizes the importance of prevention. The initial step involves raising awareness of the severity of femicide, which undoubtedly requires a multidisciplinary and synergistic societal approach. Education and the development of a culture of awareness among stakeholders at all levels play a crucial role, beginning as early as kindergarten and elementary school, and extending to the training and capacity-building of social welfare workers, judicial authorities, law enforcement, and practitioners responsible for implementing regulations.
