Summary/Abstract: This article explores the tension between the sovereign prerogative of states in matters of citizenship and the international obligations that impose certain limits on their margin of appreciation. By analyzing the evolution of the concept of citizenship and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, the study emphasizes the importance of respecting fundamental rights when exercising state powers related to citizenship, particularly in cases of its withdrawal or refusal to grant it.
