Summary/Abstract: This report focuses on the Bulgarian folk songs with piano accompaniment, included in the collection „Southern Slavic folk songs“ by the Croatian composer Franjo Kuhač. They constitute the earliest examples of the genre of preparing a Bulgarian folk song for voice and piano in the works of foreign composers. The collection contains 5 books – the first four were published in Zagreb in the period 1878-1881, and the 5th book was published after his death – in 1941. Tracing some of the characteristics of the authentic original sources and peculiarities in their harmonization is important to understand the distinctive features of Kuhač’s approach when working with Bulgarian folklore.
