Summary/Abstract: The mask raises questions, intrigues, reassures, sparks curiosity, while at the same time it frightens because it is synonymous with disorder, with the power of the numinous. The definitions of the word are multiple and varied depending on whether it is used in its literal or figurative sense. Worn over the face, the mask can have various functions: hiding the face from others' gaze, symbolizing a character; it also conveys emotions and allows the wearer to play a role different from their own personality, or protects them from various external dangers. Understood in different forms in all human societies—from antiquity to the present day—in both its tangible and intangible heritage dimensions, and fulfilling multiple social, religious, cultural, aesthetic functions, etc., the mask belongs both to the realm of the real and the imaginary.
