Summary/Abstract: The phraseologisms in legal language, legal writing and social life: freedom of conscience, civil disobedience, conscientious objection and conscience clause cannot be treated as synonyms. The broadest meaning is freedom of conscience which appears in the Polish legal system as an element of the broader forms “freedom of conscience and religion” and “freedom of conscience and belief ”. Contrary to civil disobedience and conscientious objection, the conscience clause is the legal clause attached to law that allow not to perform certain duties (e.g. to provide certain medical services) for religious or conscientious reasons. Recognizing the conscience clause as an aspect of freedom of conscience does not mean that it is impossible to assess and to change the legal provisions, especially in the context of the evolution of views and the secularization of society in a democratic state ruled by law.
