Summary/Abstract: The expenses of the ship during the voyage can be divided into three basic categories: cargo-handling depended costs, fuel costs and canal dues. Given the upward trend in prices, the cost of fuel in the total calculation represents one of the major financial items. The standard fuel costs include the cost for the usage of heavy and light fuels, for the main propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery respectively. Numerous possibilities of reducing the fuel cost can come from understanding and exploiting the basic characteristics of specific fuel properties. The main property of viscosity is attributed to its decline with increasing temperature, thus reducing the fuel consumption. In this paper we estimate the maximum amount of savings in the fuel costs by the fuel viscosity manipulation on the basis of existing model, but based on the average prices of fuel for the year 2016. Such method is compatible with other approaches of fuel savings that may already be implemented on board, and does not require any additional investments.
