Summary/Abstract: The characterization of Turkestan, which has a deep-rooted history, as a backward land in the XIXth century is an issue that needs to be examined in detail in terms of Turkish history. Turkestan, which stayed away from information and technology, lost its warrior characteristics, and adopted the logic that if it was fated, it could not be prevented, was seen as lands that could be colonized for Russia and was occupied. The sun of enlightenment was born in Crimea and Kazan with İsmail Gaspıralı's vision for Turkestan, which paid a heavy price for losing its freedom and was looking for hope. Gaspıralı, who acted as an intellectual leader through the Usul-u Jedit schools and the newspaper Tercüman, spread the slogan of "unity in language, idea and work" throughout Turkestan. Fearing that their own interests would be harmed, some reactionary-minded Kadimists were the biggest obstacle to the group called Jadidists. The struggle for independence against Russia took a back seat to the Qadimist-Jadidist struggle. The Kadimists, who thought that the Jadidists were as dangerous as the Russians and wanted to preserve their position, tried to close down the usul-u Jadid schools that were opened with great difficulty. The people, who did not want to abandon the deep-rooted tradition inherited from their ancestors, showed interest in the qadimists at first, but started to lean towards the Jadidists for reasons such as the education of their children, concern for the future, and giving their lands to Russian immigrants. In this study, the developments and their effects as a result of the struggle between the Kadimists and Jadidists in Turkestan are analysed. The study was prepared with survey model and document analysis method.
