DESCRIPTIONS OF PERSONS IN THE POPULATION REGISTERS OF TRABZON PROVINCE

Summary/Abstract: Since the early period of the Ottoman Empire, population censuses were conducted for purposes such as determining those who were eligible for military service and taxpayers within the country, and these censuses were recorded in population registration books. In addition to revealing the quantitative status of the population, population registration books are important as they provide extensive data to analyze the economic, ethnic, social and cultural structure of the people who lived in the relevant period. The aim of this study is to identify and classify the adjectives used in the description of people by examining the population registration books of Keşap and Sürmene districts of Trabzon Province during the Ottoman Period. The materials examined by document analysis method were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. It was found that people were described according to their physical characteristics (height, beard-mustache color), disabilities (eye, leg, arm, etc.), kinship relations (son, nephew, grandson, etc.), occupational groups (headman, janitor, etc.), and military service status (eligible/not eligible for military service). Accordingly, in the Sürmene and Keşap District Population Books, persons are described in similar ways and limited adjectives; according to their height (tall/medium/short), according to mustache and beard color (black, white, yellow, auburn, etc.), according to disability status (blind, mute, one-eyed, etc.), according to kinship relations (son, grandchild, cousin, etc.), according to their occupational groups (headman, servant, janitor) and according to military status (eligible/ not eligible for military service).
