Summary/Abstract: The Moravian Karst, located north of Brno near Blansko, is a 100 km² karst plateau in Devonian limestone featuring unique geological formations such as the Macocha abyss and a network of caves explored by scientists like Karel Absolon. Unlike the Dinaric Karst, it is characterized by small surface depressions (zavrtkys) in loose sediments rather than large rocky dolines, and its evolution is traced through four main phases—starting with surface valley erosion and ending with the active underground river Punkva. The caves were primarily formed by mechanical erosion from underground rivers, which carved complex networks, and in their final phase, pressure from water led to ceiling collapses, forming features like the Macocha abyss.
