Summary/Abstract: The Serbian Royal Academy experienced two pivotal moments that defined its long-term mission: the 1888 royal endowment of King Milan for the promotion of Serbian spirit and culture, and the prophetic testament of its first president, Dr. Josif Pančić, urging the Academy to focus on sciences relevant to the Serbian and South Slavic world and to preserve the purity of the Serbian language. These events set the course for the Academy’s role in language cultivation, emphasizing the importance of producing a national dictionary and grammar, inspired by examples from French, Italian, Hungarian, and Romanian academies. Despite earlier resistance and ideological disputes, the development of the Serbian literary language was gradually institutionalized through the efforts of Matica Srpska and the Society of Serbian Letters, culminating in the recognition that a comprehensive dictionary and orthography were central to the Academy’s mission.
