Summary/Abstract: In this comparative study we explore the mechanisms through which blending of words takes place in Bulgarian and Romanian and we also aim to clarify the theoretical aspects of their occurrence and functioning. The focus is on new-coined words that consist of clipped parts of two or more source words. The selection of the subject matter is motivated by the escalating influence of such lexical formations across various languages globally, including those under examination. The term traditionally assigned to these lexemes in both Bulgarian and Romanian linguistics is “contamination”, but because of the novelty of the phenomenon a standardized, unitary terminology is not available. This paper endeavors to explain what are the discrepancies and similarities of the process in the two languages. The classification criteria are revisited as well.
