Summary/Abstract: The enlargement of the European Union is considered one of the Union's most successful policies, recognizing that it is a process of mutual benefit for both the EU and the acceding countries. A key player in this process are the countries of the Western Balkans. The European perspective is a driver for reforms and is essential for promoting peace. This is probably why the EU is the largest investor and trading partner in the Western Balkans. It is precisely because of the enormous desire of the political class and the societies in these countries that the lack of a clear European perspective in certain periods becomes a cause of political instability and caretaker governments, such as in the Republic of North Macedonia. The article examines the processes and progress of the Western Balkan countries on their path to the EU and the partnership from the EU side in support of this process and the effect for Europe of its entire implementation.
