Summary/Abstract: This article examines the effects of evolution of ICT, current trends in e-business practices and the role of libraries in the information economy. What happens to libraries in a digital world? Why the libraries did not change as fast as other players/actors in the information society? Why the libraries still develop their own units for electronic information services but not through an adequate e-business model? What is the role of libraries in the information cage? Essentially, the study refers to future of the libraries and defends a concept that they should be developed as active organizations in the information economy. The article analyzed recent data (2010) for the development of e-business and its impact on the economies of various countries. The study marks the potential of the libraries to participate more actively in e-business through the development of electronic services. Analysis of the data from the world's leading organizations is the basis for the conclusion that the models and the practices for e-business evolve. Furthermore, the ability to create new models and practices for business evolve too. In this area, the author sees a niche for a new initiative for libraries.
