Summary/Abstract: "Lebenslauf eines dicken Mannes, der Hamlet hieß"(1932) is the only novel by Georg Britting (1891–1964), who otherwise wrote short stories, poems, and plays. As the title already suggests, Britting subjects Shakespeare’s traditionally youthful dramatic hero to a transformation that manifests itself fully in corporeality. Hamlet’s attributed physiognomy and insatiable gluttony seem, at first glance, to have nothing in common with the highly gifted, even brilliant individual who, with his rich imagination, pronounced sensitivity, and aesthetic interests, essentially represents an artistic nature. This study will examine, along the eight chapters of the novel, the specific metamorphoses to which the Hamlet material is subjected by Britting, and what role spatial staging plays in the text.
