Summary/Abstract: In modern Europe gendered nature of burgeous ideology and distinction of public-private is among the issues discussed by researchers studying field of gender issues. This study analyze how bourgeous, or middle class, gender identity were shaped in 19th century of England based on relevant literature. The bourgeous ideology carrying principles of legal order, equality and freedom contradicted itself and did not advocate an egaliterian order on the basis of gender, and women could not be subject of liberating initiatives until the end of century. However, as critical research on the period call attention, contrary to the idealized gender ideology, daily life pratices were not free from examples where women positioned only in the private sphere and men in public sphere. While the relevant literature confirms the existence of women in the public sphere, eroding the bourgeois gender norms of the period, it points out the duties of men in the private sphere.
