Summary/Abstract: During the critical controversy surrounding the British film 1917, Steve Rose raised the idea of a new cinematic sub-genre, which he called the pacifist war film. This new trend, which can be traced back to Saving Private Ryan, changes the established genre patterns of the war film in a number of ways, and is inseparable from the new victim-centred view of history that became canonized in the 1990s. Rose cites a whole series of recent films that fit into this new genre, including international hits such as Dunkirk, The Hurt Locker and Hacksaw Ridge. In this new trend, while the protagonists are often men performing heroic deeds, patriotism may be emphasised, there may be uplifting images of the national flag, as well as exciting battle scenes, the main objective of the protagonists is to save lives, and the main proof of their heroism is their ability to remain true to their values and principles, or simply to remain human in difficult circumstances. In this paper, I explore the constructions of masculinity in these films, with particular reference to the changing historical meta-narratives that influence them, the new values of the 21st century and the relationship of the protagonists of these types of films to the established masculine types of war films.
