Summary/Abstract: This paper offers a „deconstructive” analysis of Ari Folman’s 2008 animated documentary Waltz with Bashir. The film, as conceived by its creator, seeks to present an authentic depiction of a significant historical narrative. Its organizing principle revolves around uncovering a forgotten personal memory, with the central traumatic memory stemming from Israel’s 1982 preemptive war efforts. The analysis focuses on the unique animated stylistic exercises as a form of audio/visual anamnesis and explores the narrative possibilities and constraints of representing war trauma. In Folman’s reconstruction, the experience of war and the interpretation of history remain problematic and contradictory, yet cohesively interconnected within the cinematic experience. This complexity underscores the fluidity of interpreting historical facts and the cinematic aspiration to grapple with the personal/impersonal engagement with traumatic events.
