Summary/Abstract: The development of the concept of trauma and the formation of the symptomatology of post-traumatic syndrome are closely related to the psychological examination of soldiers who have experienced war. Trauma is inherently battlefield trauma, and PTSD has entered psychological diagnostics primarily through the trauma experienced by Vietnam War veterans. In this study, we examine when war-related trauma became a focus of feature films, the relationship between the spread of the concept of trauma and the publicity of veterans’ traumatic experiences. After a brief introduction to the history of the concept of trauma, we define what we mean by trauma awareness and trauma focus in terms of films. To clarify the concepts and show their evolution, the issue of war trauma is placed in a film historical context, and the most important historical phases of Hollywood’s veteran films, a paradigmatic movement in international cinema, are reviewed. In the final section of the paper, we examine the approaches and phases detected in American cinema in Hungarian film history, take a closer look at the emergence of trauma-conscious and trauma-focused war films and their history, and analyse two works in more detail (Bálint Fábián’s Encounter with God, Forever).
